This past month, I had the pleasure of working closely with Kalli Cakes of Delaware, Ohio to create a bridal bouquet, modern and earthy wedding centerpieces, and an awesome wedding cake topper to adorn her bold canary yellow cake. We collaborated to gather ideas to accomplish a modern yet earthy look so that the cake and wedding flowers would complement each other without being too matchy-matchy. I loved the way these turned out… wish I would’ve had these for my wedding! Andrea at Kallie Cakes and I were so proud our creations for this Columbus Ohio wedding!
We choose the following components to be used in our wedding flowers and wedding cake for this Columbus, Ohio event: camel colored ostrich feathers, turquoise wire, birch bark, hemp roping, assorted succulents, white o’hara garden roses, white stock, and craspedia. This adorable and modern cake was adorned with an assortment of succulents and a whimsical display of craspedia and turquoise wire.
Here are several other photographs of our creations that we’d love to share with you!
The great thing about collaborating so closely with a cake artist is that we can ensure the overall look is consistent. When you’re looking for a wedding florist or a wedding cake artist, it’s so great when you can find someone who has a close and comfortable working relationship with another. It makes the communication so much easier for you, and your vendors will work together to ensure a unified look which will be noticed from the ceremony to the reception.
Feathers are totally “in” right now for use in wedding flowers… and I was even crazier about these camel colored ostrich feathers once I took the bouquet outside and could see the movement of the feathers in the breeze. Totally cool! Here’s a link to another project we did last year using feathers of a completely different look: Laura’s bouquet.
One of my favorite floral components is the fiddlehead fern curl (also used in Laura’s wedding flowers referenced above), so I used this turquoise floral wire to mimic the shape of the fiddlehead ferns. I think the bold blue color gave a dramatic and modern twist, and was much more noticeable than a deep brown fern curl would’ve been. The choice to use stock in the wedding flowers was the perfect finishing touch and sort of an afterthought…which I’m so glad we used because it is such a wonderfully fragrant flower. We had so many wonderful compliments on the fragrance of these!!
Working with natural birch bark for your wedding flowers can be an interesting challenge, as it has to be very saturated and soaking in water in order to make it soft enough to wrap around stems or to be made into cylinder vase shapes.
We would love to discuss your ideas for your Columbus, Ohio wedding and come up with new ideas that will make your wedding day everything that you’ve dreamed of. We hope to be your choice for Columbus Ohio wedding flowers!!
